VOICE CARE HACKS

As a singer, your voice is your greatest asset. It is as important as any other musical instrument. The only difference however is that, unlike other musical instruments, the voice cannot be replaced if for any reason it gets damaged. This write-up will give some tips on how to always keep your voice in good shape.

  1. Drink lots of water: Water keeps you hydrated and keeps your vocal cords lubricated; a well lubricated vocal cord will vibrate nicely. In addition, water flushes out toxins from your body. That said, it’s better to take several little sips in a day, than to drink a whole jug before singing. A word of advice: go for room temperature.
  2. Exercise regularly: Physical and vocal exercises both get your body and voice ready to function optimally. While physical exercise keeps your body in good shape, and helps you maintain a good singing posture, regular vocal exercise will help you to sing in an healthy manner so you don’t damage your voice, improve your vocal tone, keep you mentally alert and confident, and make you sound great. However, vocal exercise is not a ‘one size fits all’ thing; you need to find out what works best for you.
  3. Eat healthy: As far as eating is concerned, the general advise is to eat healthy and of course in moderation. However, there are certain meals that you should avoid before singing/when you have a performance in view.

Fatty food and dairy products- they tend to stick to your throat, you just want to clear your throat till you get rid of them. This makes you feel uncomfortable, and puts a lot of strain on your vocal cords.

Caffeine and alchohol: dehydrates you and dries out your vocal folds. Not good!
  4. Get enough sleep: Studies have shown that lack of adequate sleep increases the level of cortisol (stress hormone) in the body. When you’re stressed the things you would normally do, becomes difficult. You need to be well rested to optimally coordinate your breathe, intonation, pitch and general stage management .

  5. Avoid the pressure to perform: The pressure to perform or impress will make you loose focus. It will make you continue when you should have stopped singing. The result is almost always not good. So, when next you feel the pressure to show off at the expense of your voice, do yourself a favor – Say NO.

  6. Don’t Strain: If you have to strain to sing, then something is wrong. You’re either singing out of your range or using the wrong technique. Whichever way, you may end up damaging your voice.

    Here’s are some helpful tips:

    • Always choose an appropriate key.
    • Take a vocal rest whenever you feel tension or pain in your vocal cords; singing should never be painful.
    • Avoid yelling or talking at the top of your voice.
    • Avoid switching between extreme temperatures.

In summary, whatsoever is good for your health is good for your voice. Take care of yourself!

You are the God of awesome wonders

You have shown me so much mercy
Much more than I deserve

My eyes have seen, my ears have heard
The wonders of your praise
Creation bows in awe of you
And we join to give you praise

The words you speak turn things around
Your outstretched arm
Has lifted me
You took away the chains and cords
That held me bound

5 Reasons Why You Should Use Your Earphones

Music is definitely a delight that keeps a lot of people going in the course of their day-to-day activities. In one of our opinion polls, someone said it made their creative juices flow seamlessly. However, is it possible to keep playing music everywhere you find yourself without disturbing others? Sure it is, but you will have to use your earphones.

This article will focus on reasons you should invest in earphones, and a few things you need to know about them.

  1. Whether at home or at work, wearing your earphones will allow you to move around freely, while you listen to your music unhindered. This is particularly because earphones are portable.
  2. As earlier said, using earphones is definitely a way you can listen to music without disturbing other people’s preference and space.
  3. If you’re a singer or musician who learns recorded music, you will understand the importance of using earphones; it will make you hear every bit of the music-harmonies, hidden notes, fuller instruments etc. That said you will need to wear both ears.
  4. If you want to avoid “bleed” while recording your song, then wear earphones. It’s that simple. Wearing earphones during recording will also allow singers to hear exactly how they sound, and control their voices accordingly.
  5. Using good earphones (in-ear monitors) will not only isolate noise, it will most definitely help singers and musicians to hear themselves clearly over loud music.

Types of earphones

There are two types of earphone: In-ear and Over the ear.

There are also two types of over the ear: Open back and closed back. Open back earphones are usually good for playback, while closed back are more suitable for tracking vocals.

Earphone Tips

  • Always keep the volume of your earphones low
  • It’s not safe to use them while driving or walking on the road.
  • Try as much as possible not to share earphones, sharing may lead to ear-infections
  • Never use earphones with a phone that’s being charged

If you have other earphone tips, please write them in the comment section below.
